Back to School: How Not To Lose It

A few weeks ago, September seemed a distant memory but now it is on the horizon and gathering pace. You’ve got the list of all the things you need to buy your children, you are prepared for the trauma that is school shoe shopping and have even preempted screams of “do we have to go back to school,” with a promise of a trip to the cinema at the end of their first week. But, how do you ensure your kids don’t lose all the things you have just bought them?

Here are our top tips on: ‘How Not To Lose It’ when your kids go back to school.

Tip 1: Labels, Labels Everywhere:

Whilst labels don’t prevent your kids from losing something, it will aid in getting it back. Woven labels with your child’s name on them will help in determining whose cardigan is whose or whose PE kit is whose on a daily basis.

Tip 2: Mittens On A String:

It’s an oldie but a goodie, if your child has a habit of losing gloves and mittens tie them to a piece of ribbon or string and pass them through the sleeves of their coat. Easy.

Tip 3: Marker Pen:

If you can’t sew a woven label in it, then crack out the sharpie. Pencil cases, calculators, folders and textbooks can all be name checked with a marker pen. Again it might not aid in them not getting lost in the first place but it will aid in their successful return.

Tip 4: Get A Bag With A Zip

Bags fall off hooks, they get kicked under chairs, thrown in pens when it’s time for assembly so make sure that you buy one with a zip. Forget tote bags, plastic bags or even the drawstring kind sometimes a zip will keep the contents safe.

Tip 5: If You Love It, Leave It At Home

Whilst your children will want to show off their latest toy, cd, game for the X-Box, the easiest way to prevent them from losing it at school is to leave it at home.  They might get cranky, but if the options are show it off and lose it or play with it everyday when you get home, I think they’ll come to the right decision.

So there you have it, our top tips on how not to lose it when the kids go back to school. Whilst they are not full proof you’ll be thanking us when two weeks in you hear the immortal words, “Mum, I’ve lost my PE Kit.”
