Getting Creative – Where to Start

If you run a pre-school you’ll already know that children love to make stuff. There’s nothing more fun than getting out the paints, paper, and foam stamps and getting creative. But what do you make? Where do you start? Children’s imaginations hold a wealth of fun things to make and create but if you need to keep them a little more ‘on task’ then why not offer them the following suggestions.

Pasta Pictures

They’re a timeless classic. Parents everywhere have learned to expect the termly pasta picture and know how to ‘ooo’ and ‘ahhh’ in all the right places. For the child, there’s nothing more fun than sticking bits of dry pasta all over card and letting their imagination run wild as to what they want their picture to be. Sticking with the pasta theme, if you’re bored of the picture, you can always encourage them to use Penne to create jewellery instead.

Greetings Cards

If there is a holiday coming up why not have the children create cards to give to their parents? Christmas is a great reason to get out the glitter and sparkly pens! You could also make
cards for Easter, Halloween or Birthdays!

Instruments

Another fun thing to do with food! If you have some kitchen roll tubes get the children to scrunch up some tin foil and put it inside. Seal one end and fill with a handful of rice before sealing off the other end. Then use whatever you want to decorate your tube and there you have it, your very own rainmaker.

Painting

Grab some different foam stamps and some poster paints and let the children go wild. They will love making different scenes with the different shapes and colours available. If you don’t have any foam stamps, why not go old skool and create some interesting designs using potatoes.

Paper Mache

The possibilities are endless when it comes to paper mache! You can create masks using balloons for Halloween or create pottery and other household items.
