Some Cool Facts About Solar Energy

Everyday we are inundated with statistics about global warming, the depletion of fossil fuels and the every growing state of the human population. We are inundated with information on what we can do to make a difference; use less water, implement solar energy generators into our homes, buy hybrid cars or better use a bike.

But here are some facts about solar energy I bet you didn’t know:

  • Enough sunlight falls to earth every hour to satisfy the world’s energy demands for a whole year!
  • Based on fact 1, if we covered a small area of the Sahara Desert with solar energy generating cells known as photovoltaic cells we could harness the suns rays into providing enough electricity to fulfill the requirements for the whole world.
  • Albert Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921 for the work he was conducting on solar energy and photovoltaic possibilities.
  • It is estimated that it will take over 5 billion years fro the sun to run out of fuel.
  • It is great for the environment, cheaper than current methods and is almost (am pretty sure we’ll all be long gone In 5 billion years) infinite.

Those preaching the benefits of solar energy generators are no longer hippies in communes or protestors up trees they are business men, Mum’s of three and students who are hopeful that their tomorrow is one they can afford. So next time you get a leaflet thrust at you about solar panels or selling power back to the grid, stop and think. Einstein is just one of the most recent scientist to be awarded for his work on solar energy generation but he is well down on a long list of scientists who came before him. This change has been a long time coming, it is not a fad or a fashion it really is the future of power generation on earth.
