A Guide To Being a Disabled Driver

I used to hate driving around when I first became disabled. You start to notice that people stare a lot more. I soon learnt to live with that though and I now actually quite enjoy cruising around in my converted vehicle. Plus, there are actually some benefits believe it or not!

Parking
Before I was disabled I used to envy disability drivers. I know that sounds really selfish but it’s true. There’s nothing I hated more than driving around a car park to find that there are only disabled places left. Since I’ve got my badge I probably have overused it to the extreme, but hey, you need to make light of the situation.Southern Mobility Vehicles

Wider spaces
We’ve all been in the situation where we’ve finally managed to find somewhere to park and you open your door and bash the car parked to the right. Disabled spaces are wider so you do not have to worry about a note being left on your windscreen!

Getting in and out
I have an adapted vehicle as I have no use of my legs. This means that I need some help in and out of my car. This can always be a bit awkward but I also know that there is faith in the world and I could get some help from a stranger if needs be.

Controls
I control everything in the driver’s seat with my hands. Not a pedal in sight. It looks confusing but it’s easy to get used to. Plus, I love showing off my car to other people and watching their baffled looks!

If you’re a disability driver like me, you probably do not look at the brighter side or all these things that most people would call a chore. The truth is, you have to.
