My Weekend on the Isle Of Wight

I’ve been so busy over the past couple of weeks, I haven’t even stopped to think about the fun I’ve been having. I don’t actually manage to get out a lot as I’m disabled so when I do go out and do something big, it always means so much more to me.

I had been trying to convince my Mum to take me to a festival for a few years now, but she has never obliged as she said I was too young or it will be too busy for me, or we’ll need a wheelchair access vehicle. Isle of Wight posters were starting to creep up on the walls and I thought I would try my luck again by asking my Mum.

To my surprise, she said yes!

After weeks of planning in advance, we found ourselves on a ferry from my home town of Portsmouth over to the Isle of White. We had a special wheelchair accessible vehicle to pick us up on the other side that my Mum had pre-arranged.Wheelchair Access Vehicle

I absolutely loved the festival! At first I felt a bit out of my comfort zone but that feeling vanished as soon as some of my favourite bands started performing. I saw Bon Jovi, The Killers, The Stone Roses and many more.

Everybody was really considerate about the fact there was a wheelchair user amongst them. People moved out of the way, helped me if I needed it and treated me like any other person. I thought it would be a bit of a pain seeing over the crowd when the acts were on, but chair users have their own raised platform to watch the show from. It was a brilliant view!

I think my Mum even enjoyed herself, which is something I was very surprised about! I’m going to see if I can convince her to let me go again next year too. I doubt she’d let me go without her or certain things set in place such as a wheelchair access vehicle. Isle of Wight festival life has really opened my eyes to something that I didn’t think I would get to experience and I can’t wait to do more!
