Without even realising it, it’s pretty much guaranteed that you will have been through a form of aptitude testing in your life time. The name sounds a lot scarier than it is, which is why instead of confusing people it is often alternatively called ‘personality testing’.

Aptitude testing is designed to determine how a person deals with certain situations and what kind of personality they have, as opposed to how intelligent they are. The test may seem daunting at first, but if you answer truthfully then you can learn a lot about yourself. Some of you may have already had an inkling about the sort of person you are but maybe not quite realised why or the impact it has when working with others.

School

The first aptitude tests you will encounter will probably be during your time at school. Schools like to find out how well you work with other people; these tests help determine your tutor and possible classes. They can also help you choose your options, which could affect your career choices for later life.

College

Aptitude testing often takes place when you have your college interviews. These tests allow the assessors access to information which determines whether you will need further help and support whilst you are studying or not. They give a good insight into how you will work in this crucial period of change in your life. College is the first time you will be treated like an adult, with choices, so it’s important to see how you deal with the changes personally.

Work

Aptitude testing takes place at almost all interviews for established companies. They usually come in the form of multiple choice questions or a series of questions where the applicant must choose the answer that is most applicable. Employers use these tests to see how well you will fit in with an already established team, after all it’s no good employing an individual who likes to work alone into a team which requires a lot of team work.
