From Education to a Career – Potential Courses At The University of Winchester

A few days ago I visited Winchester and had a look around the University campus. I’m a second year student in college and I have no idea what I want to do. I really enjoyed looking around the city and have decided that I would love to move here when I am working and settled.

I will have 4 good A-Levels (predicted) under my belt with enough UCAS points to do pretty much anything I choose. In college I’m studying web design, performing arts, photography and English literature. My interests are all over the place! Performing arts and web design in Winchester seem unlikely areas of prowess when you look at the place but you’d be surprised what goes on in the iconic city.

I decided to take a look at the potential courses that I could do and whether I could stay in Winchester after doing them.

I'd love to study in Winchester, it's so beautiful!

Performing Arts
I’m loving performing arts in college and it’s something that I wouldn’t mind carrying on. It’s one of those careers that you never really see going anywhere though. I mean, I’ve known loads of older people that wanted to go into drama and/or singing and studied it for years only to end up working behind a bar on in a shop!

I was quite surprised to see that the Performing Arts (BA Hons) had brilliant feedback from ex-students so I did a little digging. There are many opportunities to perform in Winchester after finishing university. There’s the Blue Apple Theatre, along with the yearly Hat Fair which has street dance, songs and recitals from plays.

Photography
Studying photography in college has really opened my eyes to modern art and the way we look at things. I find it so interesting how much a picture can say. I would love to carry on with Photography and I think Winchester would be a perfect place to study.

The university doesn’t run a photography course but there are other universities in the area that do. I would love to stay in Winchester whilst studying though or at least visit a lot. The old architecture and general feel of the city could be captured on camera so effortlessly. I really think that a career in photography in Winchester is a possibility.

English Literature
I’m really enjoying studying English Literature at college. We read “The Kite Runner’ by Khaled Hosseini and it really opened my eyes to the power of words in a book. I’d love to own a great big house with a room covered floor to ceiling in shelves bursting with books.

Winchester University has an English and American Literature course which I think would suit me perfectly. I could see myself sitting in my own picturesque bookshop in the city centre sipping a coffee and reading the day away.

Web Design
Web Design is probably my favourite thing that I’m studying for my A-Levels. There’s something I loved about starting with nothing and finishing with a client worthy ‘product’. Web design in Winchester is on the up and there are plenty of new, thriving businesses that will need to get online.

The University runs a Digital Media Design course which I think will be perfect. I’d love to think that when my education is over I could be living my life and doing web design in Winchester. Working 9-5 and exploring the beautiful city in my spare time.

I’m still undecided on what I want to do with my life, or what I want to study when I get to Uni. One thing’s sure though, I’m getting to Winchester somehow!
